Introduction

A few weeks ago, one of my supervisors recommended I use overleaf for writing an essay.

I have used the MS word program for decades, so it seemed too complicated and not worth it.

However, I like exploring new stuff, so I looked into it and admitted that it is an excellent tool for writing an essay, report, or dissertation. Here I summarise a straightforward trick on what to do with overleaf for beginners.

Overleaf is a free LaTex editing tool.

There are a few advantages that I found.

1. Collaborative Teamwork: Distribute your work with a group of people without worrying about losing data. This is important when you work with various users for the same report. In overleaf, you can divide sections by sections, and those sections can be saved respectively. For instance, if there are four sections Introduction, Methodology, Result, and Conclusion, you can save them in different files, but overleaf will let you present them all in one report. Also, you can leave comments, so it would be perfect for collaborating with others.

2. Wide range of Free Professional Templates: Overleaf provides you with a lot of free templates that you can use. Which will make your life so easy. You just have to replace whatever is in the desired format.

3. Easy and quick tagging, captioning and more: You just have to tell them it is a figure, and then the program will number and name the figures, tables and so on for you to position them in your report. And it even gives you a list of them with the pages linked to each page.

Few Examples

If you are already familiar with HTML or Markup, then it will be easy-peasy! Here I prepare the structure I used for my latest report. Everything is straightforward as long as you can read what it means.

  • "main.tex": the main page where present the entire report.
  • "src/abstract.tex": I have made a separate abstract file as I didn't want to include it in the word count.
  • ***Another cool function here is that the overleaf gives you a valid word count. (Excluding the functional ones)
  • "src/acronym.tex": I made this to store all the acronyms.
  • "src/setting.tex": This includes all the setting codes, which is like setting up the page design, and size, and all the required packages are imported in this file too.
  • "src/titlepage.tex": This includes the title page format, as it doesn't align with the main body structure.
  • "reference.tex": If you input all the reference info here, you can cite it from the main report and it will appear at the end of the report as a reference list.
  • "appendix/appendixA.tex": This includes all the appendix files that I imported.
  • "img": This folder includes all the images or pdf files that I imported in the report.

To use these separated files like "src/acronym.tex" or "src/setting.tex", just have to type "\input{src/setting}", which is in the second line of the above code.

This is just a quite simple and straightforward tool to use. The detailed instruction may be uploaded soon or later.
